We sat down with HealthWalkToday owner, Priscilla Horswell, and instructor Krystle Rose, to get the details on their massage therapy school and what it takes to become a licensed massage therapist. The purpose of HealthWalkToday massage and Wellness Institute is to help people have healthier minds and healthier lives by restoring, rejuvenating and revitalizing the body. They prepare students to be well rounded by providing the knowledge and skills to help them succeed in their profession.
Q. What is HealthWalkToday? And how did you come up with the name?
A. We are a holistic based office that uses many bodywork modalities for the “whole” body and recently opened a massage school last year. The school offers different types of classes and programs: Massage school, Craniosacral Certificate Program, CEU, and client educational health classes. We are certified through the NCBTMB and the AMTA. The name started with the 3 most important words to me: Health (very important), our “Walk” in life, and “Today” the present (because we should not live in the past or future).
Q. When does the next School year start?
A. September 2020-May 2021
Q. What sets you apart from other massage schools?
A. It is a VERY peaceful environment, open minded, and positive. And staffed with two educated teachers who really care about the students and want to help them thrive. There’s also lots of space in the building and all kinds of extras like vibration boards, foot detoxes, kitchen, laundry, 2 treatment rooms, a classroom, 2 bathrooms, reception area, a large foyer to hang out in, and a large backyard for festivities.
Q. What will school look like for your students moving forward because of Covid-19?
A. After Covid, we managed to get ahead and immediately started virtual massage classes through messenger and the students loved that very relaxed and safe method. We take measures by UV light sanitation in all rooms along with bleaching all linens, sanitizing anything touched, and having masks on hand for any clients, students, and teachers. Social distancing is very easy in our 1800 square foot building.
Q. What inspired you to open the school?
A. 17 years ago I had colon cancer and was given 2-3 months to live if I didn’t do chemo (which I didn’t). Since then I have put my nose to the books on healthy living and non-stop education/seminars in the health and bodywork field…I cant get enough and friends wanted me to teach…so after I heard the best school around in Racine had closed, I decided to try my best at getting good Massage/Bodywork education in between the Milwaukee/Chicago area that was more affordable and holistic based….and also have acredidation through the NCBTMB and AMTA. I love teaching holistically and had many friends that pushed me to do this.
Q. What does someone have to do to sign up for the upcoming school year?
A. They can go to HealthWalkToday.com and under Massage School, can click on the Enrollment Form, fill it out and send in with a $100 deposit check. This will hold their spot. Then we will have an interview with the applicant to make sure this school/profession is a good fit for them.
Q. What is your mission statement?
A. The purpose of HealthWalkToday Massage and Wellness Institute is to help people have healthier minds and healthier lives by restoring, rejuvenating and revitalizing the body. We will prepare our students to be well rounded; providing the knowledge and skills to help them succeed in their profession.
Q. Can you tell us about the program’s curriculum?
A. Our curriculum gives students a solid foundation in the courses required to become a licensed massage therapist such as anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, ethics and massage theory. What sets HealthWalkToday apart from the other schools is our holistic approach to massage therapy and the modalities we teach.
Priscilla & Krystle will be guests on the Happenings Q&A radio show on AM 1050 WLIP July 13 & August 10 at 12:30pm. Tune in to learn more about HealthWalkToday
